Safe Environment Training Now Required for All Liturgical Ministers

Answering the Call: Safe Environment Training for All Liturgical Ministers at St. James

As members of the Body of Christ, we are each called to serve with compassion, integrity, and a deep commitment to the well-being of all—especially the most vulnerable among us. In that spirit, Bishop Douglas Lucia has asked all liturgical ministers across the Diocese to complete Safe Environment Training. This includes anyone serving as a lector, Extraordinary Minister of Holy Communion, usher, altar server, music minister, or sacristan.

But what exactly is Safe Environment Training, and why is it so important?

What Is Safe Environment Training?

Safe Environment Training is a program developed by the Catholic Church to protect children, youth, and vulnerable adults from abuse and harm. It equips all clergy, employees, and volunteers with the knowledge and tools to:

  • Recognize signs of abuse and neglect

  • Maintain appropriate boundaries and conduct

  • Respond appropriately to concerns

  • Understand diocesan policies and reporting procedures

  • Help create a safe and welcoming space for everyone

The training is available online and must be renewed periodically.

Why This Matters for Liturgical Ministers

Liturgical ministers serve in highly visible and trusted roles during the Mass. Whether you’re proclaiming the Word, distributing Communion, or welcoming people at the door, you represent the heart of our parish. Even if your ministry doesn’t involve direct contact with children or youth, your example helps shape the culture of safety and care we strive to uphold.

By completing Safe Environment Training, you:

  • Affirm your commitment to protecting the vulnerable

  • Support diocesan efforts to ensure safety and accountability

  • Strengthen our parish’s witness to Christ’s love and care

  • Help foster trust and unity within the faith community
